Tipping Etiquette Guide
Tipping customs vary globally, but in standard North American hospitality service (restaurants, bars, salons), gratuity forms a major part of the service worker's income.
15%
The minimum standard for acceptable or average service.
STANDARD
18 - 20%
The standard rate expected for good, attentive service.
25%+
Reserved for exceptional, above-and-beyond service or fine dining.
Calculating a Tip in Your Head
If you don't have our calculator handy, finding a 20% tip is quite simple:
- Move the decimal point of your total bill one spot to the left (this gives you 10%).
- Double that number.
Example: For a $45.00 bill, moving the decimal gives you $4.50. Double that ($4.50 + $4.50) is $9.00, which is exactly a 20% tip.
